Sandra Zaroufi

My name is Sandra Zaroufis. I am an Anthropology PhD Candidate at the University of Amsterdam. My interest is in understanding the channels affecting people’s access to land, water, energy and food in Mankweng, South Africa. Mankweng (Turfloop), is home to the University of Limpopo and fascinates me due to its rapid rate of urbanisation, dual governance, and predominance of Bapedi people; while adapting to the energy crisis (loadshedding) and climate change. I studied Landscape Architecture (MLA) and Applied Biology and Environmental & Geographical Sciences (BSc).

Thus, I seek to combine my previous knowledge of cartography with ethnography and arts-based methods through community engagement. Being from Soweto and of partial Pedi descent, historical factors and local knowledge take precedence in my understanding of people, places and nature. Through workshops and other outputs, I hope my research contributes to decision-making regarding resources in Mankweng and similar contexts.
